Preparing for Gorilla Trekking.

A gorilla trek is not a conventional game drive. It is a journey on foot into a living forest, where conditions can change quickly and every encounter depends on patience, preparation and respect.

Travel Guide Uganda Responsible Travel

A successful gorilla trekking experience begins long before you enter the forest. The right preparation will not take away from the adventure—it allows you to meet the forest with confidence, curiosity and respect.

Why preparation matters

Mountain gorilla trekking can take you through steep, humid and sometimes muddy forest terrain. Good preparation means being ready for changing weather, uneven ground, dense vegetation and periods of walking or waiting.

The forest sets the pace. Your role is to arrive prepared enough to enjoy the journey rather than spend the experience worrying about what you forgot to pack.

Pack for the forest, not the photograph.

Gorilla trekking is an outdoor experience, and practical gear matters more than looking perfectly dressed for a photograph. Keep your daypack comfortable and avoid carrying unnecessary weight.

Lightweight, long-sleeved layers
Comfortable, sturdy hiking footwear
Waterproof jacket or rain protection
Drinking water and permitted snacks
Hat and sun protection
Insect repellent
Camera or phone with weather protection
Binoculars, if useful to you

Good footwear can make uneven, wet terrain much more comfortable.

Dress for changing conditions

Forest conditions can change throughout the day. Long trousers and sleeves can help protect against vegetation and insects, while breathable layers allow you to adjust as conditions change.

Expect mud and rain rather than trying to avoid them completely. Neutral, practical colours are generally a sensible choice for a wildlife experience, while comfort should always come first.

Build your walking confidence

You do not need to be an elite athlete to prepare for a gorilla trek. But regular walking, stair training or gentle hill walks before your trip can help you feel more comfortable with sustained movement.

The pace is set by the group and ranger team, and the forest may require patience. What matters most is arriving ready for an outdoor day rather than expecting a short, predictable walk.

Expect the forest to set the pace

There may be steep slopes, slippery ground, dense vegetation, rain and periods of waiting. Exact trekking times and terrain can vary depending on the location of the gorillas and the conditions in the park.

This uncertainty is part of what makes the experience special. A trek is not simply about reaching a destination—it is about noticing the forest along the way.

The most memorable encounters are often the ones you cannot schedule: a movement in the leaves, a distant call, or a quiet moment when the forest suddenly feels completely alive.

Gorilla etiquette: let the encounter remain wild

Gorilla trekking is a privilege. The encounter should always happen on the animals' terms and according to the instructions of the ranger team and current park guidance.

During the encounter

Follow ranger instructions at all times. Maintain the distance required by current park guidance, avoid sudden movements and loud noise, never attempt to touch or feed the gorillas, and follow all photography rules, including any restrictions on flash.

Leave only footprints

Responsible travel is not an extra feature of a gorilla trek—it is part of the experience itself.

Stay with your ranger team and follow designated guidance. Carry out what you carry in, avoid disturbing plants or wildlife, and remember that the forest is home first—not a stage created for visitors.

A simple pre-trek checklist

Before leaving for your trek, take a few minutes to check the essentials.

  • Permit and required travel documents confirmed.
  • Comfortable, sturdy footwear ready for uneven terrain.
  • Rain protection packed.
  • Lightweight layers and practical clothing prepared.
  • Water and permitted snacks packed.
  • Small, comfortable daypack ready.
  • Camera or phone protected from rain and moisture.
  • Adequate rest before the trek.
  • Current ranger and park guidance understood.

Arrive prepared. Leave with a story.

The most rewarding gorilla trek is rarely the one with perfect weather or the shortest walk. It is the one where you arrive prepared, move respectfully and allow the forest to reveal itself at its own pace.

With the right clothing, sensible footwear, a little physical preparation and an attitude of patience, you can focus less on the logistics and more on the privilege of being present in one of East Africa's most extraordinary wildernesses.
